Equipment Manager
Position Summary
The Heavy Mobile Equipment / Fleet Manager is responsible for the strategic oversight, performance, and lifecycle management of mobile equipment across a large, multi-site construction materials operation. This role partners closely with Regional Leadership to ensure equipment reliability, cost efficiency, and operational readiness while supporting 30+ quarries, 20+ asphalt plants, and 20+ ready-mix concrete plants.
This position plays a critical role in balancing repair and maintenance decisions against capital replacement, providing clear cost analysis and recommendations to drive smart, data-backed equipment investments.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet & Equipment Management
- Oversee maintenance, repair, and performance of heavy mobile equipment including loaders, haul trucks, excavators, dozers, plant support equipment, and on-road assets.
- Establish and enforce preventive maintenance programs to maximize uptime and equipment life.
- Partner with site maintenance teams to troubleshoot chronic equipment issues and implement corrective actions.
Repair vs. Replace Analysis
- Develop and present detailed cost analyses comparing continued repair of aging equipment versus new equipment acquisition.
- Track lifecycle costs, utilization, downtime, and ROI to support capital planning decisions.
- Provide Regional Leadership with clear, actionable recommendations backed by data.
Regional & Multi-Site Support
- Support operations across a large geographic footprint, ensuring consistent maintenance standards and best practices.
- Collaborate with Plant Managers, Regional Operations Leaders, and Finance teams to align fleet strategy with production goals.
- Travel to sites as needed to assess equipment condition and support operational needs.
Budgeting & Cost Control
- Assist with fleet maintenance budgeting and capital planning.
- Monitor maintenance spend, identify cost-saving opportunities, and improve vendor and parts sourcing strategies.
- Negotiate and manage relationships with equipment dealers, OEMs, and service providers.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all equipment meets safety, regulatory, and environmental standards.
- Promote safe work practices and compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
Reporting & Systems
- Utilize CMMS, telematics, and fleet management systems to track performance, costs, and maintenance history.
- Prepare reports and dashboards for leadership highlighting fleet health, risks, and opportunities.
Qualifications
Required
- 5+ years of experience managing heavy mobile equipment fleets in aggregates, asphalt, concrete, mining, or construction environments.
- Strong understanding of equipment maintenance, repair processes, and lifecycle cost analysis.
- Proven ability to support multiple sites and work cross-functionally with operations and leadership.
- Solid financial acumen with experience evaluating capital vs. operating expense decisions.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present recommendations to senior leadership.
Preferred
- Experience supporting quarries, asphalt plants, and ready-mix concrete operations.
- Familiarity with CMMS platforms, telematics, and OEM maintenance programs.
- Technical background or hands-on experience with heavy equipment maintenance.
